Andrew Lloyd-Webber has raised £34 million for charity by selling a Picasso at auction.
The auction – held at Christie’s – was part of a huge Impressionist/Modern art sale that netted over £152 million. Lloyd Webber’s profits will go to the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation, which promotes the advancement of the arts, culture and heritage for the public benefit. Since being founded in 1992, Andrew has donated over £28 million to the Foundation.
The painting is a portrait of one of Picasso’s closest friends, Angel Fernandez de Soto, and was sold to an anonymous phone bidder.
“I am pleased that my Foundation has raised over £30 million, especially in such austere times,” said Lloyd Webber. “This is a significant amount to devote to the Foundation’s passions – architecture and the sponsorship of young talent in musical theatre.”
